Weekly Comics Haul — 5th September 2008
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #18
When this issue was first solicited the cover creeped me the hell out. It’s a nicely drawn cover, to be sure, but there’s just something icky about it.
So far in this story arc Buffy has travelled some 200 years into the future to meet with the last slayer Melaka Fray. Both girls use an obscene amount of slang and pop culture references in their speech patterns so it’s been fun seeing their attempts to communicate through the two centuries of language drift.
Green Lantern #34
We’re almost at the end of this retelling of Hal Jordan’s induction into the Green Lantern Corps. There’s been a lot of hate directed towards this arc due to it’s large amount of decompression — especially compared to the roller coaster-liek Sinestro Corps War — but I’m still digging it.
Trinity #14
I almost swore off this series after the 52 consecutive issues of crap that was Countdown. But after the first couple of issues I was hooked. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman vs talking apes, miniature solar systems and other assorted craziness. Whats not to love?
Immortal Iron Fist TPB Vol #2 Cities of Heaven
I picked up the first volume of this trade on a recommendation from a friend. When I took it to counter the comic book guy asked me why I hadn’t been reading it earlier! Best described as a 70s chop sockey movie in paper form and easily the most enjoyable book I’ve read this year.
Ms Marvel Annual #1
Feeling inadequate next to the mighty Ms Marvel, Spider-Man stuffs his suit in an attempt to rebuild his crushed ego. Maybe.
Secret Invasion Front Line #3 (of 5)
I couldn’t tell you everything that happened in the last two issues. All you need to know is that Skrulls have invaded Earth and the general population are shitscared.
The covers have been fantastic though.
New Avengers #44
This was supposed to come last week. The last few issues of both Avengers titles haven’t featured any of the main cast, so I don’t think this issue will be any different.
Young X-Men #5
Another latecomer. This time two weeks late. I’m dropping this book after this issue, I’ll have finished up the lacklustre first arc of a lacklustre relaunch of an incredibly well written book (New X-Men). Someone on that cover dies, but I just can’t bring myself to care.
Angel After The Fall #12
Another comic book continuation of another of of my favourite TV shows. The other being Buffy. This comic dark like the TV show, but the humour doesn’t come acorss nearly as well.
