iPhone Websites

A few days ago I had the chance to play around with Ange’s brother’s iPhone. While this was the second time I’d had one in my hands, it was the first time I was able to have a good play around with it.

The interface is simple enough and setting up the phone to receive external mail was probably the easiest thing I’ve ever had to configure.

The one app I did spend a fair bit of time with was Safari, the iPhone’s web browser. The tactile navigation is very nicely done. You scroll up and down the page with one finger, and use a pinching motion with two fingers to zoom in and out.

One of the first websites I looked at was my own. I was curious to see how it looked in the tiny screen. While the Georgia font renders amazingly well — far better than in Firefox even — it’s a huge effort to navigate around the rest of the website.

I think it might be well worth attempting to make a mobile version of my website. Yes, I’m well aware what I said in the widescreen websites post, and the iPhone’s native resolution of 480x320 is a far cry from the mighty 1680x1050 of my monitor. But I think this could be a neat, little side project. With a little help from web tutorials like NETTUTS it might actually be something fun to do. Who knows, I might even learn something.
